At two o'clock in the morning, a heavy truck was traveling on the highway. The driver toggled the light switch, yet the high beam failed to turn on as expected due to internal switch jamming, while the vehicle system remained completely unaware of the issue. With no fault alerts available, the driver had to repeatedly operate the switch or pull over the vehicle for maintenance inspection.
A seemingly minor lighting malfunction in commercial vehicle operations leads to unscheduled downtime, high maintenance costs, and most critically, nighttime driving safety risks.
The exterior light control switch appears to be merely a command input device. However, under high-intensity commercial vehicle operation of hundreds of kilometers per day, its reliability deserves far more attention than imagined: how to maintain stability and reliability amid frequent operations? How to detect faults in a timely manner? How to enable drivers to operate accurately at night without looking down? These concerns directly relate to vehicle attendance rate, regulatory compliance, and the safety of every driver.

Hirain Technologies has maintained over ten years of cooperation with PACCAR Group. During the partnership, both sides have continuously deepened technical collaboration, with cooperative products covering multiple fields including door anti-pinch controller DCM, exterior light control switch ELS, 24V/12V DCDC and wireless charging WLC. Recently, Hirain Technologies has secured another project nomination for the Peterbilt platform under PACCAR, supplying its new-generation Exterior Lighting Rotary Switch (ELRS). This indicates that the product's design architecture, functional safety mechanism and development process have once again passed PACCAR's stringent supplier review system.
▎New-generation Products Safeguard Real-world Application Scenarios
Leveraging over a decade of technical accumulation and customer feedback, Hirain has set one core goal for the new-generation ELRS: to make light control more flexible, intelligent and safer. Compared with previous generations, the new ELRS adopts a rotary design integrating two operation logics of rotation and pressing, and realizes all-scenario light control functions including headlamps, marker lamps, automatic lighting and light self-check as well as low beam lamps in one unit.
●Robust Safety Protection: Targeting the safety requirements of lighting systems, Hirain has embedded functional safety elements complying with ISO 26262 ASIL B into the new ELRS. Through redundant internal design, rigorous Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and high-coverage self-diagnosis mechanism, the switch is prevented from dangerous failures such as unintended lighting-on or lighting-off under extreme working conditions, building another solid line of defense for nighttime driving safety.
●Full-lifecycle Reliability: Commercial vehicles are production tools rather than consumer goods. In terms of structural design, material selection and verification standards, ELRS is developed to match the high-intensity operation demands of commercial vehicles throughout their full lifecycle. Even at the R&D stage, the product has passed strict tests on mechanical durability, environmental adaptability and electrical load performance, meeting the reliability requirements for heavy trucks operating up to millions of kilometers.
●Smart Interconnection: Equipped with a 12V LIN bus communication interface to simplify the complicated wiring harness layout. Via LIN messages, the switch can not only accurately report lighting commands but also feed back its own status in real time and support online diagnosis. It performs well both in automatic lighting mode switching and coordinated control of vehicle-wide lighting systems.
● Precise Interaction: Besides functionality and safety, the product also prioritizes stable operation for drivers. Its sophisticated optical light guide structure ensures uniform height matching between keys and backlighting, with real-time adjustable backlight brightness. The clear gear damping allows drivers to operate without looking down, reducing sightline deviation and converting interaction certainty into driving focus.
