ISO/PAS 8800 is the world’s first authoritative artificial intelligence safety standard for the road vehicle domain, released by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in December 2024. The standard aims to address risks of unexpected safety-related behavior at the vehicle level caused by output deficiencies, systematic errors, and random hardware failures of in-vehicle AI components, ensuring the safe operation of AI technology in complex tasks and scenarios.
Passing the certification by the internationally authoritative organization SGS signifies that Hirain has established a product development system aligned with the highest international AI safety standards for road vehicles. This system integrates with the company’s already certified ISO 26262, ISO 21448, and ISO 21434 systems, covering four major safety domains: functional safety, expected functional safety, cybersecurity, and AI safety. It will provide comprehensive and robust safety assurance for Hirain’s autonomous driving, intelligent cockpit, intelligent chassis, and other products.
At the certification ceremony, Mr. Binsi Lü, Director of SGS Automotive Services, stated:
AI technology has greatly enhanced the overall capabilities of intelligent vehicles in environmental perception, intelligent decision-making, and dynamic control. However, the inherent complexity and uncertainty of AI systems also introduce numerous safety risks. Therefore, ensuring the safe and reliable application of artificial intelligence in the field of intelligent driving has become a strategic priority for automobile manufacturers and industry suppliers. SGS attached great importance to this cooperation project and specially invited two international experts who participated in the drafting and formulation of the standard to serve as auditors. They worked closely with Jingwei Hirain’s functional safety and intelligent driving teams to ensure that the project achieved a mature level upon its first implementation, laying a solid foundation for the successful deployment of subsequent product projects.
Mr. Yu Wang, Assistant President of Hirain’s Automotive Electronics Business, stated:
AI technology has been widely applied in areas such as end-to-end large models, AI perception algorithms, intelligent cockpits, and intelligent chassis — which are precisely the current focus areas of Hirain. As a company that places great emphasis on product safety, Hirain has conducted long-term and in-depth research in the field of AI safety. Therefore, this certification holds great significance for the company and represents recognition of Hirain’s long-standing “safety first” philosophy. Looking ahead, Hirain will ensure product safety across multiple dimensions, including functional safety, expected functional safety, cybersecurity, and AI safety, steadily embracing the opportunities and challenges of the era of intelligent vehicles!
Hirain attaches great importance to the application and safety of AI technology. From the release of the initial draft of the ISO 8800 standard, the company immediately organized internal and external experts to interpret and explore its implementation and began building an AI development process system based on the standard. After the official release of ISO/PAS 8800 in December 2024, Hirain formally launched the certification process. During the project, Hirain worked closely with SGS to thoroughly review the gaps between its existing safety system and AI R&D system and the standard’s requirements. Together, they refined a multi-dimensional set of processes covering AI safety management, AI system safety development and verification/validation, safety analysis, data safety lifecycle, and operational safety assurance. Following comprehensive document reviews and interviews, it was ultimately confirmed that Hirain’s process system fully meets the requirements of ISO/PAS 8800.
